Creating Creative Motivation

estherjung717

This summer, I teach three 1.5 hour group day classes a day in English and creative writing. With about 10 students per class, finding both practical and creative ways to keep students motivated can be a challenge. For parents and educators, I wanted to share this idea that has worked for me 100% of the time: Creating a class city simulation of what it means to earn a living.

Essentially, I've asked the students to vote for a preferred city name, nominate themselves for a community role, and create rules that would sustain a peaceful, orderly, and fun environment. We were able to create some rules, and when they were able to keep the rules, they'd earn coins for the day. Eventually, trading in the coins would allow them to purchase items, such as a waiver for less mandatory work, school supplies, and other modest items that kids would appreciate. Within the next day, the behaviors, focus, and concentration shifted; also participation and grades soared. Class learning flew by, and at the end of each class, kids would remark, "Is class already over? I can't believe it. I feel like class just started!"

Unlocking kids' motivations has been an amazing and exciting experience. These aspects can shift per age group, environment, and classroom. Curious to what others come up with!
